~ It is an informative database contains lots of resources and audio recordings for self-study. Here are some of the hightlights: 


  • Study Area -> United Kingdom: Introduction of musical styles and periods with suggested recordings;

  • Composers: Composers' biogragphy, lists of works and suggested recordings;   

  • Resources: (i) Glossory - definition of musical terms, (ii) Pronunciation guide - pronunciation of the names of composers and performers, (iii) Graded piano exam playlists - recordings of ABRSM and Trinity graded piano exam pieces which are not up-to-date though; 

  • Playlists: Recordings grouped by music genres or instruments. Recommendations: (i) Story of .... series - an audio book introducing the history of classical music. Written transcription can be found under "Resources".  (ii) The best of ..... series - recordings of the best works of various composers. (iii) Discover series - discover the music of baroque/classical/romantic/comtemporary era. (iv) Easy-listening piano classics.

~ It contains lots of articles on music history, genres, appreciation and reviews. The articles are not particularly well organised though. It also provides a music glossory which defines musical terms.

~ Introduction of basic music theory concepts with well-designed visual and audio aids. It contains ear-training exercises as well.

~ It provides free online ear-training exercises on identification of intervals, chords, scales and cadences. 


Classical.net

~ It is an archive of various music sources, including comprehensive timelines of composers, over 5500 links to other classical music websites, CDs/books/concerts reviews, etc. 


Yale Open Courses

~ Lectures given by the Music Department of the Yale University in video forms on music appreciation. It teachs you how to listen to music. Suitable for senior students. 


台灣奇美博物館/ Chimei Museum 

~ It contains recordings of popular classical music and allows you to build up your own playlists.
